DIY Wheel Cribs: How To Get Your Car In The Air, Without A Lift Or Big Money By Building Your Own Wheel Cribs At Home

I built cars for decades with nothing more than jackstands, floor jacks, and an old frame jack that was my Grandpa’s. It was about 10 years ago that I got a lift of my own, which is a game changer, but if I had been smart I would have built myself a set of wheel cribs decades ago. These can be found in most every professional car builder shop and are ultra cheap to build even if you use new 2×4’s.

In the video below from Backyard Hot Rods you’ll see one method for putting these together. You can find lots of videos online with folks doing them, because ultimately they are super simple. If you have an impact driver and some screws, you can put these together. Ultimately you don’t even have to have a saw as you can have your 2×4’s cut at Home Depot or Lowes.

Check out this super simple design. You can also make additional small stacks to fit onto these to lift the car even higher, but keep in mind that anything over 12 inches is a little sketchy when it comes to jacking up the car in one lift. So lift it up and put all four tires on your 12 inch tall cribs and then lift again to place another 6 inches under each corner.

It’s time for another cheap tool test showdown from the Torque Test Channel and that means we are going to see some surprises, both good and bad. But it also means that we are going to be impressed and laugh out loud at some of the performances. Having recently used a cheap cordless impact gun that was marginal at best, I know that sometimes cheap isn’t the right choice. But I have also used plenty of cheap tools that work great, and many of them have come out looking like winners on Torque Test Channel testing in the past. So this week it is Amazon brands that use big name batteries. Lets see if good batteries can make a bad tool better, and how they stack up in general. The results might surprise you.

Every Mythbusters fan on the planet knows Adam Savage and knows that he’s a pretty sharp, and incredibly creative, guy who thinks outside the box sometimes. If you aren’t familiar with his YouTube channel, you might not know about the projects he does in his awesome workshop that he refers to as the cave. And while it is larger than some folks have, it is NOT a big workshop in the grand scheme of things. That means he needs to be very smart when it comes to organizing his tools, equipment, and supplies, so in this video he is modifying and improving his hardware storage system with some pretty smart ideas.

How ACCURATE can someone build a WELDING FIXTURE TABLE, only using a grinder and a welder?

No really, this is totally a thing now! We live in 2024, and if you haven’t been paying attention to services like SendCutSend, OSH Cut, Xometry, or the numerous other online CNC Laser, Waterjet, and Plasma Cutting services, then you need to start looking at different things on social media because the ads are everywhere. You can now design parts on their websites, or send your own drawing to them via email, and they will get you a quote to make your parts and send them to you at home. There are also likely places locally that can do this for you so that you have no shipping charges. No need for a CNC cutting machine of your own. That means that there are some projects you might otherwise not have thought realistic to do in your home garage, that are. And making a welding table is one of them.

In this video you are going to see how this can be done, at home, with just a grinder and welder for a fraction of the money of an equivalent table. Yes it is work, but it is doable work, and we found it really interesting.

If you missed Part 1 and 2 of this 1953 Chevrolet truck chop, we’ve got a link below to make sure you see them too. In Part 3, he takes what most would say is the quick and easy route to try and finish up the roof section of the top chop and unfortunately it bites him. But lucky for us that is the lesson we need and we see how to fix the mistake and learn some stuff that will save you tons of time and energy on your own project’s sheet metal.

I’m a sucker for a chopped top on a 54 and earlier car or truck, but have never actually done one myself. I’ve fixed some bad sheet metal and welding on a couple, but never actually chopped something that was perfectly fine to start with. So when I see someone cutting stuff up, it makes me happy and jealous and I know it does the same thing for you guys. So in this video from Carter Auto Restyling, a new 1953 Chevrolet truck project is coming together and that means chopping the top. A bunch. But is a bunch too much? I’m excited to see just how this thing will look when it is all finished, but you’ll get a real rundown on how to plan for one right here. This is a cool project, and who doesn’t love this body style of Chevy pickup? Round fenders are cool and I think I’m going to want one of these before this series is over.
