That being said, we’ve seen Americans done up all sorts of ways: drag cars, road-racers, customs and let’s not forget AMC’s own take with the SC/Rambler. They’re rugged enough to make for a decent little dirt-basher as well. If you wanted to raise a little hell on a gravel road, you’d be fine. But how about this for a bit of a challenge: take two backyard mechanics, the Rambler, and a CBS cameraman and ship them all to London, England in November. Point in a direction that’s generally speaking south-easterly, tell them they’re in a competition, and inform them that between the starting line and the finish line they’ve got 10,373 miles of what may or may not constitute “road”, several countries, a ferry crossing for the English Channel and a boat ride from what was then still called Bombay to Fremantle, Australia and hey, what the hell, the entire continent of Australia, west to east for good measure.

In a 290-powered Rambler American. Okay, it was a former Shell 4000 rally car, but still.

Now, most common-sense people would’ve just turned 180 degrees on their heels, flew two fingers high in the sky and walked away. But Sidney Dickson, John Saladin and cameraman Jerry Sims took on the challenge and managed to place 46th out of 98 entries. More impressive is that they finished the journey in the same car that they took. Even more impressive was that the Rambler was still romping around in 1991 when MotorWeek came calling to see this battered rally car for themselves. Dickson would run the rally in a even more prepared American again in 1993. Makes you wonder where those two American Motors anvils are at now, doesn’t it?

I can only imagine what it is like riding all the way up front in this thing when it leaves. You’d feel every bit of front end lift to the extreme and it has to make it an absolute riot to drive. I dig this thing in every way and love the amount of work that has gone into it.

One thing we loved about our trip to Santa Pod Raceway was the variety cars that were fast that looked like they shouldn’t be. Like this old Volkswagen Bus, van, truck, or whatever you want to call it – we’re still undecided. It has a billet, air-cooled, 3.0L rear mounted engine, it’s shaped like a brick, and manages to crack 8 second passes in the quarter mile. Who wouldn’t love that?

John says it weighs near 3,000 lbs, which is heavy for one of these, but it makes sense with all the chassis that is underneath it. And it does make 500 to the tires so it’s no slouch either! I bet there aren’t many VW busses that can keep up with this one, that’s for sure.

The paint job on this 1947 Nash gasser is a WILD ’70s design, but the paint job is actually the reason this car was parked in 1971. The owner paid $5,000 for the paint job and the white base coat turned yellow due to the clear coat. This car remained indoors until 2008, when it was sold. It was put back on the track a few years later and is still ripping up the local nostalgia drag racing scene. The car runs with the Straight Axle Mafia, and runs select events with the Southeast Gassers Association.

The old paint is ALL ORIGINAL, and this thing still has its original race car interior from the late ’60s. This car ran at the US Nationals in 1966, and ran in Upstate New York for most of its life. It now lives in the Louisville, Kentucky area. Horsepower was previously a Hilborn injected 327 with a 4 speed. It now has what the owner described as a “$300 small block” with a tunnel ram and two 4’s. What a killer old school gasser with tons of great history and a paint job that gets everyone’s attention.

We are introducing a new project “Gold Finger”. We saw this boat on FB Marketplace and had to have it. So, me and a buddy hopped in a borrowed truck and drove 500 miles each way to get it. It’s a 1974 Lund Tempest II GT. We never heard of Lund making fiberglass jet boats. The sleek design and that wild gold metal flake had us hooked at first sight. Follow along as we get this thing cleaned up and running.
