It’s been a dozen years ago that Darrell Waltrip took this ride around Mount Panorama in Bathurst, Australia, but boy is it fun to watch. As a driver, it is certainly not something he’s comfortable with, but being the showman that he is means this is some serious entertainment. If you haven’t seen this video in a while, then you need to watch this one. He’s talking the whole time, in a car that wasn’t originally setup to house two people on the race track, and while it is totally entertaining I’m not sure he was real comfortable with the whole thing.

As an event announcer, who has raced on multiple occasions while mic’d up and talking, I can also tell you that there have been a few times when someone had a bad idea like this that I jumped at and later on wondered if it was smart. I’m sure DW had a few moments like that during this lap. Check it out.

Video Description:

Team BOC’s Jason Bright gave NASCAR legend Darrell Waltrip his first taste of a V8 Supercar, taking him for some hot laps around Mount Panorama in Bathurst, Australia. The four-time NASCAR Champion was clearly thrilled with his high-speed passenger ride.

Crash testing is one of the most costly, interesting, and important factors in developing new cars. Sometimes it even he new cars that are used for crash testing as this video form Chevrolet proves out. You are about to see a C3 Corvette that has been fitted with some cutting edge technology for the period…air bags. The car is used in an offset crash style situation and as you’ll watch, the airbags do their thing, but does the car?

The video is not slated so we have no idea what year it was made in, but it looks all the world like the late 1970s or early 1980s to us. The Corvette itself is a chrome bumper car so that gives you an indication of its age. Clearly the idea was not to add airbags to the C3 platform but to test their efficacy for later inclusion into cars like the C4 and up.

If there is one interesting element that seems to fail the dummies in this crash it is the seats and the seat belts. Watch how the “driver” slides completely out of the seat and kind of just tomahawks around the passenger compartment. With no side bolstering to hold the driver in place and only a three point belt, the side impact sends him for a pretty good ride after he rebounds off of the air bag.

This is cool stuff and proof that automotive safety has been as much an evolution as performance has, even in cars like the mighty Corvette.

Some cars and trucks will just be forever cool, right? We think that the GMC Syclone is among that group. The looks, the performance, the drivetrain used for its era. All of these things set the little muscle truck apart from the rest of the world back then. As it turns out. Hell, as it always turns out, there’s a lot more to this story than we ever knew and the video below does a wonderful job bringing a lot of that to light.

From background information like the fact the truck was originally pitched as having used the Grand National proven 3.8L V6, to the point that two different companies were basically pitted against each other to create the prototypes which the company would eventually approve. Hell, we didn’t know that by government standards this thing is not even calld a GMC?!

Great history, story telling, and knowledge dropped here. Check this out!

This is a gem of a video. Made by the Perfect Circle Piston Ring Company in 1974 it takes us through the world of manufacturing rings from conception to actual quality control tasing. It also takes us to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the running of the 1974 Indy 500 and that in an of itself is awesome. Lloyd Ruby who was truly one of the best race drivers in the world at this time is the leading man and that’s the only major mistake made with this film. He’s so unintentionally hilarious it is hard to not crack up every time he speaks. There are guys who stiffen up on camera and then there’s a new state of matter that Ruby becomes with the camera is on him.

The neater parts of this video are when we get to go and see how the rings become a finished product (circa 1974, we’re guessing things have advanced slightly in 45 years). There’s loads of testing and R&D work being done in this video and we understand that it’s the same way for large piston ring manufacturers today as well. The basic ideology is largely the same but the methods, accuracy, and specs have all changed over the decades.

The last section of the video is a throwback to an era of engine work that really does not exist anymore. There’s a basic “how-to” that concentrates on how to perform a ring-job on an engine. How many times do we hear of cars getting a set of rings and sent back out on the road, anymore. Sure racing engines get them and perhaps if you buy an old truck or something and want to get it roadworthy but re-ringing the engine in the modern service life of a car is kind of a lost action anymore.

This is a fun watch.

Filmed in the middle 1960s, “Carroll Shelby Goes Racing With Ford” was a promotional film made to highlight both the production cars and racing efforts of Ford and Shelby America. From the GT350 to the brand new (for the time) Ford GT, we get some amazing footage of them being built, of them being raced, and of them being tested at Willow Springs in California. That section of the video, the one where Pete Brock, Ken Miles, and Dan Gurney hammer on a GT350, Ford GT, and Cobra at Willow Springs is largely narrated by a youthful looking Brock.

The most fun part of the video for us is watching a pretty stuff Carroll Shelby muddle his way through the script. At this point in his life, Shelby had not exactly spent a ton of time in front of the video camera as a “host” of anything. Of course, he took to it like a fish to water and by the time the “media age” was in full swing, Shelby was a smooth as silk on screen and right up until the end, his smiling face could be seen all over the country mugging for the camera. In this video he’s clearly not 100% comfortable with the scene but does a good job. It is just fun to see the guy who was always so smooth kind of ratchet his way through.

The racing footage and commentary from Dan Gurney are pretty awesome. We see stuff like the 24 Hours of Daytona, Sebring, etc, during the coolest periods of their existence. We said in the title that you’ve never seen this video before and hopefully you have not! We’ve never seen the video before and we troll the internet for hours and hours on end each day looking for this stuff. With only about 500 views when I posted this, I’m guessing only a few of you have ever stumbled upon the film gem.

Carroll Shelby may be gone but his legacy is still going strong. This video reminds us of his role in taking the American road racing effort and elevating it to something legit on the worldwide stage. It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t fast, but he was able to do what others were not and that was to take on the giant European names and beat them at their own game. Of course he had Ford’s bankroll behind him, but no matte how much cash you have, the results need to come and with Carroll Shelby, they did.

Somewhere along the line I guess I lost the memo about the fact that you could still actually buy a DeTomaso Pantera in the year 1987! The cars were interesting in the fact that the body and chassis construction was done in Modena, Italy and then the final assembly work was done here in the USA, that work included the installation of a warmed up 351 Ford engine, the trans-axle, etc. The body had some modifications with the big rear wing and some other add-ons that while very 1980s, took away from some of the beauty that defined the car’s shape early on in ints production run.

This thing was a hod rod, not just by the standards of the day but really by any measure. The fact that it kept the American/Italian theme going so well is awesome and wait until you hear how it sounds because it sounds awesome. The MotorWeek crew had the car singing a good tune at the spacious and fast Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania so this was not just a deal that involved idling the car around the neighborhood, they get after it here! Not just in the slalom and brake stop stuff, either. The have this car on the NASCAR course as well as the infield road course.

Call us crazy but we’d love to own one of these cars now. Yes, we’d warm the 351 up a little, literally. Some aluminum heads, a little camshaft, and EFI would be plenty. Give us 500hp at the tire and we’ll be more than satisfied to hit the streets.

Oh, one last thing. How hot did your luggage get sitting directly over top the engine in the rear of the car?! Hopefully no one packed chocolate bars!

Back in the late 1960s the United States was absolutely gaga for motorsports of all kinds. Stock car racing, drag racing, sports car racing, open wheel racing, and motorcycle competition were all booming. Manufacturers were pouring money into various series and the object of the game was simple. Win. Millions of fans were showing up across the country at venues and events to party and to root on their favorite cars and drivers. Other major companies were looking to hook on this action was well and Coca- Cola was one of them.

This video called, “Pit Stop” is basically a driver’s education film that is dressed up to look like a racing film. Hell, maybe it is a racing film dressed up as a driver’s ed piece. What we do know is that it is wall to wall cars. Some of the passenger cars shown are cool, like the Buick GS that kind of winds its way through the whole video. You’ll see racers like Mario Andretti and others getting after it. We think that it’s really cool the drags got a nod here among the other perhaps more high profile forms of competition.

If you were born in the first half of the 1950s and you were coming of age to get a license in the late 1960s, there’s an excellent chance that you actually watched this film. Did anyone see it as a fresh release? We think that this is a fantastic watch!

We hate when we forget about cars, but thankfully there’s the internet to remind us of their existence. While we remembered the VW Corrado (mainly because we knew a guy in college who owned one) we had forgotten that there was a performance model called the G60 which packed an odd and effective supercharger to aid performance. The “scroll type” supercharger had an inlet of 60mm which is how the G60 got its designation. Making about 12 psi of boost from a truly odd design, it helped take the 1.8L engine’s output to 158hp. One of the things that this video gets slightly wrong is inferring that the G60 engine was the same as every other 1.8L plant.

Yes the displacement was the same but the reality is that VW had changed so much of the guts of the engine to deal with boost and the increased power output that it was nearly a fresh piece when lined up with other standard 1.8L variants. How was performance? Damned good for the period and this was one of the models that helped to revive VW in the USA which had been struggling mightily since the cancellation of the Beetle and with Japanese competition which were producing cars of equal performance and quality for far shorter prices.

The supercharged Corrado would run the quarter mile in 15.7 seconds, it would get to 60mph in 7.5 seconds, and it would run to a top speed of 140mph. Those were legit performance numbers at the time and they were wrapped in an interesting looking package, which some people enjoyed and some did not. The Corrado would be produced through 1995 and its ultimate performance form would be with the VR6 engine, but the interesting fact there is that even with the VR6, in automatic trim the 1990 G60 was quicker to sixty!

Neat car. Anyone out there have one?

Turbocharged two stroke engines, especially of the gasoline burning variety are not things that we see with regularity. Of course forced induction works on a two stroke, just ask Detroit Diesel, but it is just not a very common thing to see people messing with. Thankfully the guys who made the video below were messing with it and the results were beyond bad ass.

This is a little Yamaha TR125 and while we do know that it is huffed, we do not know where the turbo came from, how hilariously small it is, and where you can find one. We can tell you that according to the video there were virtually NO internal modifications to the engine. There were stronger clutch springs added to the engine which we’re guessing was to keep the thing from just running away on the stock clutch.

The engine was factory rated right around 26-27hp and with 1 bar of pressure being shoved into its face, enriched fuel system, and the hammer down this thing made 53hp effectively doubling the factory output and doing it in a very, very short money way.

Can you imagine this thing on the back of a shifter kart? We’re thinking that ginger throttle application would be necessary coming out of the corners and on the straights you’d be passing people like they were tied to a stump.

Fun deal here and a neat engine!

From 1931 through 1953 the Buick straight eight really made its mark in the American automotive landscape. They were made in varying displacements and even varying block sizes but the one most people think about when this engine family is brought up is the 320ci “big” engine of the family. This displacement was produced during the 1936-1952 time frame and it powered the more luxurious and high end cars of the Buick lineup.

What do we mean by “big” engine? Well there were two different blocks used to make the straight eight. The 320ci variant was in a block 34.5 inches long and the smaller variants like the 221, 230, 233, 235, 278, and even the larger 345 were built off a block that was 31.25 inches long. Just carry your measuring tape to the cruise night to figure out what family you’re looking at. People will love that, we’re sure.

The 320ci Fireball Eight had a 3 7/16th bore and stroke of 4 5/16. They did not turn a lot of RPM, obviously but they did make solid power for their day. The 320 was factory rated at 168hp at 3,800 RPM. Back in the era of their newness, they could compete with the best any other car company was cranking out. These engines actually become somewhat popular in the weirdo D/dragster category of drag racing in the 1960s where strange engines ruled the day. In fact, straight eight engines can still be found in pretty good supply at the Bonneville Salt Flats during speed week each, year. We have included video of a hairy one being dyno tested here.

So there’s your quick and dirty lesson on the 320ci Buick straight eight here on 3/20.

Here are some cool Buick straight eight videos – We THINK they all “big” engines –
