(Words and Photos by Joe Grippo) By now hopefully, you have checked out the BANGshift coverage from one of our favorite events, The Pumpkin Run held annually at Harry Flemings Auto Parts Junkyard. The car show is massive with everything for everyone with a love of internal combustion. This one-day show is huge so get there really early and make a day of it enjoying the show offerings and grab a bite from one of the many food trucks on the premises.

There are many side attractions at the Pumpkin Run like the sizable flea market and the intense competition at the garden tractor pull, but my favorite activity lies in the further rearmost perimeter of Harry’s business. This is where you will find the wonderful remnants of Flemings Auto Parts or what regulars call, simply, the junkyard. Once a thriving used parts business is now mostly just picked over hulks returning their elements back into Earth. Rusty bits that could tell quite a story, if only they could. I love wandering and getting lost in the piles of cars and trucks looking for details of their history, I always start by searching for hints of the dealership where the journey began for these derelicts. Cool stuff.

The huge variety is on display out on the show field, of course, but the junkyard certainly holds its own in that category. Maneuvering through the overgrown foliage of sticker bushes, trees, vines, and bushes, you may stumble on a 40’s something Chevy sedan next to a Fox Body Mustang lying next to a Porsche 944 across from a mid ‘50’S Ford Fairlane 500 Retractable. As stated, most of this stuff is too far-gone to be saved, but the final service of this stuff is cool photo-ops. Fall is the perfect time to explore this yard as the leaves are fallen (and covering everything) and makes for a picturesque setting.
Dig in…

(Words and Photos by Joe Grippo) The AACA Hershey Region Fall Meet photo onslaught continues! This time it’s the culmination of Hershey week with the AACA Car Show. This show is for the best of the best, enthusiasts from worldwide bring the vehicles they have restored, toiled over, dropped umpteen bucks on, and proudly parade them onto the show field. All this effort is rewarded by getting torn apart by expert AACA judges, for the privilege of claiming a Junior, Senior or the ultimate…a Zenith Award. These accolades add valuable notoriety to the history of the vehicle, plus a probable bump to the eventual selling price.

A big and growing section of the show is the Survivor and Preservation class, wherein you may find an American La France Fire Truck parked next to a big Lincoln Mark IV next to a 1990’s Minivan next to a Model A Touring Sedan. Something for every taste. Other show classes cover just about everything with an engine, some of my favorites included the muscle car, ‘50’s production cars, and European Sports cars classes. The Commercial Truck and Fire Apparatus classes are also extremely interesting to ogle over.

The Race Car class was very well attended in 2022, with a few killer Drag Cars entered. Check out the Smothers Brothers King Olds W-31 convertible G/Stocker, I spent an inordinate amount of time climbing all over that one, talking to the owner and digging through his build book. A few SCCA racers, some cool dirt racers and even a flat track Harley were also on display. In addition to the show portion, one of the criteria of the race car certification is making a few condition runs on Thursday before the show at the Hershey Stadium. Dig into the photos.

Another highlight of this one-day car show experience is watching the show field empty out onto the roads and head home. No trailers are allowed on the show field, so each vehicle needs to drive on and off the field under its own power. It makes for the world’s coolest traffic jam.

In past years the Car Show was held on Saturday after the Swap Meet week wraps up, a big change for 2022 was Hershey Co. deciding to keep the amusement park open weekends through October, necessitating shifting the weeks activities forward a day. The now Friday show, had folks concerned attendance would suffer, let’s put those fears to rest, the place was packed!

Put it on your schedule for next year, be there in 2023. Hershey never disappoints!

(Words and Photos by Joe Grippo) The full name of the event is the 67th Annual Antique Automobile Club of America Hershey Region Fall Meet, most just call it Hershey. Many others, including your humble writer, call it the greatest automotive event in the world. For 1 week each year in early October, tens of thousands of car fanatics descend on the grounds of the Hershey Amusement Park and the adjacent Giant Center stadium, with good walking shoes and hopefully deep pockets searching for that elusive ancient car part or next project. We were among them, though our pockets weren’t that deep.

Hershey lore says walking each aisle of the swap meet and the car coral, would tally-up 29 miles of traveling. Hunting through nearly 9,000 swap meet spaces and close to 1,000 car coral spots can take some effort, but you have 5 full days to shop, so pace yourself. Keep in mind the host club is the AACA whose focus is stock and original cars and trucks, so hot rod stuff is there but it’s in the minority. Think horseless carriages, brass-era, Model -T/A’s up to 50’s chromed land yachts, muscle cars up to anything 25 years and older. Extreme variety is the name of the game. I’m not looking for Packard stuff, but I love checking it all out. One of my favorite activities at Hershey is looking for extinct ancient automobile manufactures that I previously never new existed. This year I added Erskine and Ames to my pretty useless list of old cars. You never know what lies in the next booth or aisle. And I love it all.

The RM Sotheby’s auction house also holds an event during the week at the nearby Hershey Lodge offering up some serious collector vehicles to more well-heeled attendees. With depression era, beautiful massive Cadillac’s and Duesenberg’s and 60’s Porsches and Jags, among other drool worthy lots, we were regulated to looky-loo status. No problem, I love my old Mustang.

Hershey is my most anticipated, non-drag racing event on the calendar, take my advice and go.
Dig through the galleries and marvel at the insane offerings from Hershey I spied with my trusty camera.
