The video is not slated so we have no idea what year it was made in, but it looks all the world like the late 1970s or early 1980s to us. The Corvette itself is a chrome bumper car so that gives you an indication of its age. Clearly the idea was not to add airbags to the C3 platform but to test their efficacy for later inclusion into cars like the C4 and up.

If there is one interesting element that seems to fail the dummies in this crash it is the seats and the seat belts. Watch how the “driver” slides completely out of the seat and kind of just tomahawks around the passenger compartment. With no side bolstering to hold the driver in place and only a three point belt, the side impact sends him for a pretty good ride after he rebounds off of the air bag.

This is cool stuff and proof that automotive safety has been as much an evolution as performance has, even in cars like the mighty Corvette.

With the sale of Houston Raceway Park last year, TX2K was in need of a new home and with only one really big world class drag racing facility left, that meant that TX2K had to move to the Texas Motorplex in Ennis. This track was the first all concrete dragstrip in the world, and also the first to see a 300 mph pass, and we’re sure it will see new records during TX2K as well. The boys at 1320Video have some great video coming and are saying they have been seeing some of the best cars they have ever seen attend TX2K.

Video #5 Description:

The last day of TX2K is notoriously crazy with everyone pulling out all the stops and turning it up to 10. We had some amazing wheelies, upsets, reruns and all around great day of racing. With a slight rain delay around mid afternoon we picked back up like nothing happened thanks to the amazing track crew getting the track back up and running in record time, and not just on Sunday but all week long. This event wouldn’t be what it is without them!

Day4 was a bit of an upsetting day because we didn’t get to race all day due to rain. Even with the rain coming mid-afternoon we still had a ton of great racing early in there day and got to see Heavy Weight and 2jz class get some awesome passes for their 8th round of qualifiers. Stay tuned for day 5!!

Day 3 was another great day for racing, we unfortunately had a bit of a rain delay during our roll race eliminations but we got back to the action with just enough time to get through our finals for all the roll race classes. Lots of great racing, lots of false starts as well, but we only leave in the good stuff.

TX2K Day 2 was another great day outside Dallas, tons of amazing drag racing passes from some reigning champs and new faces who came to throw down in the south. Drag racing qualifying went off flawlessly thanks to all the awesome racers and volunteers out here. We ended the day a little early due to some predicted rain but were already back and ready for more racing!

TX2K first full day of racing went off without a hitch! So many familiar faces and returning champions back to try and bring home a win again! The staging lanes were packed full of some of the craziest builds we’ve seen at a 2k event, setting the bar for qualifying higher than EVER! We finished off the night with some awesome drag racing qualifiers to prepare to day 2!

As much as we sometimes see the big tractors get a little squirrely, these little tractors are lighter and because of their short stature they are far harder to control. In drag racing terms it is the difference between a long wheelbase dragster and a fuel altered.

In this case, the tractor known as the Groundshaker gets into a bouncing situation as the driver fights for control. As we so often see, one bounce too hard breaks the unsuspended front end and at that point, the driver is helpless but to do anything other than tuck in and pray that it all stops quick.

Watch the driver’s body and how violent this situation was. There’s good reason that these tractors have roll cages, the drivers are fully suited, and that the sled operator is so important. The sled operator shut his program down as quickly as possible but that’s a lot of weight to get stopped at speed.

I hope you’re sitting down cause this is one long, strange and fun road trip. Episode 286 of Mike Finnegan’s Garage is all about a trip my friends I took, which began in Georgia but saw us driving to the coast of South Carolina and then to the mountains of North Carolina and finally, back to Georgia. Along the way I bought a 1970 Datsun 510 two-door, with the goal of driving it from the beach to the mountains so we could go snowboarding one last time before the season ended. The car was mostly great and it made it home intact. My leg? Not so much. lol

For the majority of the video you’ll see cool high performance cars and even a Ford F-150 Raptor zipping by the camera around a corner on the track nicknamed, “Eiskurve” or Ice Corner in English. Once you hear the squealing tires and see the sliding CRV on the right hand side of the frame, brace for impact because it crashes in scary fashion, rolling over and ending outside the guard wall after launching all of the luggage, water bottles, loose change, and fast food wrappers in the vehicle out the windows during the barrel rolls.

This is proof you can run out of talent in a vehicle so slow it would seem impossible to run out of talent in.

We’re going to take a peek back here to 1978 and a day when Sammy Miller rocketed (literally) down the track in his funny car and a day when what had to have been the last front engine top fuel dragster of the day was retired forever. Sammy Miller’s name needs no introduction but the other racer likely does. Mickey Nayler was the owner and driver of a really nice top fuel car called the Medicine Man. Built by Don Long as one of the last slingshots he would ever stick together in 1971, the car ran a 417ci aluminum Donovan hemi on nitro backed by a two speed transmission. As many of you know, by 1978, the rear engine dragster was the de facto method of getting down the track in top fuel, but Nayler held out and held out strong over in England. We’re reasonably sure that his was the last front engine top fuel car still running the category by this time in history.

As you will see around the 3:00 mark, Nayler came off the starting line and because the nose ballast apparently fell off the car, he launched skyward and ended up flipping the car over and rolling it multiple times, effectively destroying the car. We’re guessing that this car was likely running in the low 6-second bracket well in excess of 200mph.

The cars are cool, the crowds are big, and one of the world’s neatest drag strips was living large in ’78!

Practicing for the Daytona race, Sheene was rolling hard on the banked oval portion of the course when the rear tire of his bike failed. As you’ll see, he instinctually reacted, nearly saved the machine (and himself) before being heaved off the bike in a violent high siding incident. Lying as a broken lump on the asphalt of the silent and empty speedway, things looked pretty damned bad.

Cut to the hospital where doctors are looking at his mangled leg and then cut to Sheene in the hospital bed. Young and with a mane of tussled hair, he relays the story of the wreck in the first person and it is electrifying, especially when he says, “It didn’t kill me, hell it didn’t even knock me out…” We’re guessing the drugs were pretty effective in managing what had to have been some hellacious pain from the leg injury and having all the skin ground off his shoulders.

The video crew was in the exact right place at the exact wrong time. The narrator is none other than Murray Walker, one of the greatest announcers in racing history. Walker himself had a life steeped in motorcycle competition. His dad was an Isle of Man TT winner and a hero racer in England when it was the world’s capitol of two wheeled competition.

The whole thing is amazing and 100%, completely, utterly, 1970s.
